Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi deemed ‘suspicious’ the air raid on a shrine near Kirkuk which left tens of innocent Iraqi people martyred or injured, and called for clarification of various aspects of the attack and the accountability of the perpetrators.
“Attacking innocent and mourning people cannot be justified by any excuse,” Ghasemi stressed. “The suffering people of Iraq should not be under terrorist attacks on the one hand, and on the other, bombardment by foreign military forces that prance around in Iraq under the pretext of fighting terrorism.”
The Iranian diplomat further expressed condolences and sympathy to the Iraqi government and nation, and the families of the victims of this ‘cowardly’ attack.
At least 15 women were killed and 50 other civilians injured after fighter jets operated by the US-led coalition struck a mourning procession in Iraq’s northern province of Kirkuk.
The air raid came on the heel of an ISIL suicide attack on a power plant in the town of Dibs, located 55 kilometers northwest of Kirkuk, which killed 18 people, including three Iranians.
